Part 3 – Spanish market update

Part 3 Spanish market update

The second-quarter figures from the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego ( DGoJ ) in Spain show the casino sector continuing to drive forward , helped by further growth in slots revenue .
Gross gambling revenues ( GGR ) for the whole online sector rose to € 98.8m in the three months to June , up 56 % year-on-year but a slight fall on the previous three month total of € 102.3m due to seasonal factors . As can be seen below , the half-year total of € 201.2m represents a 43 % rise on the first half of 2015 . ( See figure 1 ).
One of the most important developments in the Spanish market within the past year or more has been the rise of slot revenues since they were regulated midway through last year . ( See charts )
Slot machine revenue rose to € 11.7m in the second quarter , up from € 9.5m in the first quarter which seasonally is a more gaming-friendly period . In the second quarter , we can see that slots revenue is close to overtaking roulette . In this sub-segment , while regular roulette was slightly down in the second quarter , with GGR falling slightly year-on-year to € 6.14m from € 6.24m , live roulette ( also introduced to the market in 2015 ) rose from € 3.04m up to € 5.74m .
The slots and live roulette figures show the degree to which innovation can be central to the growth story , even in a relatively new market where effectively all products are new , at least in a regulated sense . This is perhaps confirmed by the data from DGoJ on betting where we can see that in-play betting now represents just under 70 % of total stakes versus 30 % for pre-match .
However , in terms of GGR this changes to a split of 52 / 48 % as the second quarter benefitted from improved margins in pre-match betting compared to a particularly weak second quarter last year . For the second quarter , amounts staked grew to € 1.3bn .
In terms of poker , revenue fell 4.4 % year-on-year to € 13.8m with the tournament form of the game accounting for 52.9 % of revenue from an equivalent 34.1 % just two years earlier .
In terms of players , the new signups grew over 75 % year-on-year in the second quarter to 671,900 . This also represented a near 16 % rise on the first quarter .
There was precious little detail revealed by the market leaders in the recent reporting season : bet365 leads the way with an assumed market share total of 25 % ( as per our last report ), followed by PokerStars
