2022 SAW a number of major developments in esports gaming regulation , with some jurisdictions working to loosen the regulatory red tape to encourage growth in the industry and others continuing discussions to open up the sector .
NEVADA
In the US , the state of Nevada has been making significant strides to open esports wagering , thanks to the efforts of the eight-person Esports Technical Advisory Committee ( ETAC ) of the Nevada Gaming Control Board ( NGCB ), which was appointed in 2021 .
In October 2022 , the ETAC voted to recommend amendments to Regulation 22.1201 , the NGCB ’ s regulation overseeing race books and sports pools which adds a section on esports .
According to the proposed amendments document drafted on 10 October 2022 , if approved , this would “ explicitly include esports within other events ; to allow books to accept wagers on esports events in the manner of traditional sporting events ” among other proposals .
The amendments would also allow a sportsbook to accept wagers on an esports event ( online or in the state itself ) without the express approval of the NGCB chair , as long as the tournament , video game and operator are all prim and proper , free from the sanctions list and all the proper records are kept .
That being said , some don ’ t believe the new regulation amendments will “ move the needle ” and lead to a flood of wagering as one may think .
