Part 1: Data review
Here we dig into the first
eight months of data on
sports betting and five
years’ worth on online
gaming and look at
what developments and
lessons can be heeded
beyond the Garden
State’s borders
Section i: Sports betting – the
data to date
Sports betting has been up and
running in New Jersey since June last
year but as far as online operations
are concerned the data only goes
back to August. This paucity of data
points means that any conclusions
drawn from what we have seen so far
are necessarily tentative.
However, the data is instructive
even if it is limited as it helps us
to understand the potential future
trajectory of not just sports betting
in New Jersey, but also further
afield. Because New Jersey is the
biggest state outside of Nevada
to offer sports betting and was
at the forefront of the push in the
Supreme Court to bring an end to
PASPA, what is learnt in the Garden
State will be heeded far beyond the
state’s borders.
What is certainly the case is that
the New Jersey authorities can be
pleased that their alacrity in getting
the market open in as short a time
period as was practicable after the
Supreme Court justices delivered
their opinion in May has been
