Legal igaming in Brazil goes live and it ’ s lift off for online-only lottery in Goa
Across the emerging markets , the biggest story for quite a while has been Brazil and its online gambling regulation that was expected to go live on 1 January ( correct at the time of publishing ). The journey hasn ’ t exactly been smooth sailing with several parties warning against the legalisation of online gambling – and even trying to table a bill to prevent it from happening . José Francisco Manssur , former special secretary of the Brazil Ministry of Finance , cautioned that a ban would be a backward step for the country after Senator Sérgio Petecão proposed Bill 4,031 / 2024 to ban online betting in Brazil over concerns that it is driving fiscal debt and gambling addiction . The Secretariat of Prizes and Betting ( SPA ) did clarify that it would ban the use of credit cards for betting , prevent ads from showcasing gambling as “ socially attractive ” and prohibit influencers or celebrities from promoting the activity .
Staying in Brazil , at least 20 operators have dropped out of the application process for federal betting licences , with Super Group ’ s Betway the highest-profile name on the list .
Elsewhere , in India , the first online-only lottery launched in Goa on an app-based platform with Rhiti Group as the operator . Currently 13 states , including Goa , permit lottery games , with others having banned the activity due to concerns about gambling addiction , mismanagement or corruption . Goa government chief Narayan Gad said the regulated games will “ set a new standard in the lottery industry ”.
