In 2014, IFDC marked 40 years
helping smallholder farmers
achieve prosperity. Now, the
time has come to reach forward.
The final 2014 issue of IFDC
Magazine focused on innovation,
considering the question, “What
will it take to prepare the world
for global food security?” IFDC
believes that following its strategic
plan readies the organization for
tackling the challenges of feeding
the world in the future.
According to the 2012-2015
Strategic Plan, IFDC’s two
objectives are: 1) pioneer and
catalyze improved plant nutrient
performance by developing and
disseminating new technologies
and practices to smallholder
farmers using a range of
innovative delivery mechanisms;
and 2) strengthen input and
output markets for the benefit of
smallholder farmers. To address
these, IFDC intervenes in six
specific areas.
Below is a sample of activities
from 2014 that represent our
intervention areas.
Develop More Efficient Fertilizer Products
In 2014, IFDC continued to develop and disseminate more efficient fertilizer technologies. The FSI
project in Myanmar encourages rice farmers to use UDP to boost rice yields by up to 25 percent. In
Kenya, ARM Mavuno entered into a partnership with IFDC to make the same technology and training
available to at least 10,000 smallholder farmers in the country. The engineering and pilot plant staff
