WHAT WAS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF A GAS MASK ?
The main purpose of a gas mask was to protect toxic air from inserting into your body . But sometimes gas masks were also used as goggles to power through smoke .
The Gummimaske was the first full face mask made of rubber fabric and featuring an interchangeable chemical air purifying system : the cartridge filter .
These first cartridges were composed of vegetable coal , hyposulfite and soda ash .

Early gas masks were crude as would be expected as no-one had thought that poison gas would ever be used in warfare as the mere thought seemed too shocking .
