10 n 1862 , the idea of identification tags for soldiers was introduced , and soon rejected . After the German - Danish war , a craftsman from Berlin proposed the idea of identification tags again , this time calling them “ Hundesmarke ” meaning dog tag .. After this idea was put out there the second time , it was finally used .

At first , soldiers used paper tags , stenciled their clothing , carved into

wood , and a lot of other methods . Once they got dog tags , when they

died , one would go to their family and one would go to the general .
