On Valentine’s Day, I pick her up from school with her bag of valentines and we race home so she can pick through the candy. She asks me how many she can have, and I tell her that because it’s a special day, she can have two pieces of candy for her snack. She smiles. She eats one small package of candy hearts. When I ask her which candy she wants next, she politely declines. So I ask her if her tummy feels okay. And then she says it, “No, my tummy doesn’t hurt, but I’m getting kinda fat.” Her smile disappears and so does mine. I give her a hug and tell her that she isn’t fat at all; she is perfect, but I don’t think she believes me. And why would she?
