Safety Starts with Awareness A 'Technical Skills Development Program on Electrical safety' organized by the IEEE WIE Affinity Group, University of Peradeniya was held on 6th June, 2018 at the Na onal College of Educa on, Penideniya, with the par cipa on over 170 female trainee teachers. This program was conducted with the aim of developing technical skills and educa ng non-engineering females on safety, wiring, earthing of electronic appliances, electrical installa ons and minor repairs of appliances. It was conducted for the second me in collabora on with Kelani Cables PLC under the guidance of Dr.Maheshi Dissanayake, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya and the CEO of Kelani Cables PLC. The president of the Na onal College of Educa on, Ms. Ramya Mahabodhi and the Co-Founder and Coordinator of 'Kelani Saviya', Mr. Jayantha Wijesinghe took part in the event. Prof. Janaka Ekanayake, Designer and Co-Founder of the 'Kelani Saviya' CSR Skill development program, addressed the gathering. This technical program consisted of both theore cal and prac cal sessions. During the first session of the program, a lecture on 'Electrical Safety' was delivered by Mr. Sanjeewa Gunathilaka, Sales Engineer of Kelani Cables PLC. At the end of his session, prizes were awarded to those who answered the ques ons posed by him correctly. At the prac cal session, the par cipants were educated on the prototype of an electrical installa on circuit board consis ng of MCBs, RCCBs, Trip Switches, radial circuits and earthing systems. Then they were asked to iden fy the components and were given an opportunity to get hands on experience on electrical circuits by building their own circuits. This session was conducted by the members of the WIE Affinity Group, University of Peradeniya. At the end of the program, par cipants were well equipped with knowledge and skills in handling electrical appliances in daily life.
