Until now, cataracts have been the main cause of blindness in the world, it consists of surgery that removes the lens of the eye that has been obstructed and changes it by an artificial one. A work published today in the journal Nature can improve the results of these patients, at least children.
Surgery that is currently applied requires an incision in the lens capsule, which can cause problems after the operation due to inflammation, and that destroys stem cells from the eye that the protect from wounds. In children, the success of these implants is limited because the eye, in part, is still growing.
A team led by the Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China, has developed a new technique that uses the same patient's stem cells to regenerate the eye lens with the best results and fewer complications.
