Aligners and their actions - A literature review
Introduction The use of thermoplastic appliances , is primarily recommended for mild malocclusions , and it is often used successfully for alignment of the mandibular and maxillary anterior teeth and this form of treatment has been reported to be one of the most accurate and highly predictable type of tooth movement with aligners . This literature review aims at evaluating the efficacy and effectiveness of clear aligners in bringing about Orthodontic tooth movements .
Methods Used Pubmed to search of electronic database in English and using filters “ Clinical trial ” to find topic related articles published up to now .
Results There were 170 articles found with the keyword " Invisalign ", 78 articles with " clear aligners ", 82 articles with " thermoplastic Orthodontic appliance ", 31 articles with “ clear plastic appliance ”, and 23 articles with " sequential removable Orthodontic appliance ". 15 clinical studies related to this topic were found . The accuracy of tooth movements for clear aligners was studied in 3 articles .
Conclusions Clear aligners can move teeth effectively in some tooth movements . The mean accuracy of tooth
5
movement of clear aligners ranged from 41 % 9 to 56 % comparing between predicted and actual achieved results . However , clear aligners are new treatment methods that also affected by many different factors from traditional braces and need to combine with some auxiliaries to increase treatment efficacy .
Introduction
The first clear aligner was introduced by Kesling in the early 1940s . However , it did not gain much popularity because of scepticism and the lack of promotion at that time . With the development of dental materials and 3D technology , clear aligners became more popular .
The number of adult orthodontic patients is increasing significantly , therefore new aesthetic orthodontic therapies such as lingual braces or clear aligners are needed to meet the demands . The clear aligners use a series of clear thermoplastic customized aligners to move
teeth to new positions . Clear aligners are the ideal choice for adult orthodontic patients who are hesitant to wear fixed braces , especially patients with mild to moderate crowding or spacing .
Even though the movement of teeth with thermoplastic appliances has been clinically documented , the force delivery properties of these appliances have only been evaluated in a few in vivo and in vitro studies of tipping movement .
The aim of this literature review is to evaluate the efficacy and effectiveness of clear aligners in bringing about Orthodontic tooth movements .
