“ Pindborg tumour : an unusual presentation with mental nerve dysfunction ”
Pindborg ’ s tumour or calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour is a rare and aggressive benign odontogenic tumour of epithelial origin , accounting for about 1 % of odontogenic tumours . It commonly presents as a slow growing asymptomatic swelling . We report an unusual case of CEOT associated with numbness of the chin . It was treated by radical surgical excision . Mandibular continuity was restored by a reconstruction plate .
Introduction
Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour was first described as a separate entity by a Danish pathologist Jens Jorgen Pindborg in 1955 . This nomenclature was adopted by the WHO in “ Histological typing of odontogenic tumours , jaw cysts and allied lesions ” ( 1971 ). It was e a r l i e r r e f e r r e d t o a s a d e n o i d adamantoblastoma , unusual ameloblastoma and cystic odontoma . The term “ Pindborg tumour ” was coined by Shafer , Levy and Hine , in 1963 . mandible , gradually increasing in size over the last 2-3 years ( Fig . 1 ).

Mandible is more commonly involved . Though benign , it has an aggressive biological behaviour with a few malignant variants also reported in the literature .
An unusual case of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour with mental nerve dysfunction is being reported here .
Care Report
A 51 year old patient presented with a painless , swelling over the right side of posterior
She also gave a history of numbness over the chin for the last few months . She associated the swelling with a previous extraction in the same region . The patient ’ s family and medical history were non contributory .
All her vital parameters and routine blood investigations were within normal limits . No cervical lymphadenopathy was noted . On palpation , the swelling was smooth , hard in consistency , non fluctuant and non tender . Neurological examination revealed complete sensory loss along the distribution of the mental nerve . All other cranial nerves were intact , with no cerebral or cerebellar abnormalities . A PET scan was advised . No metastatic behaviour was detected .
