The Journal disease , will need to be determined and should include careful and consistent follow-up . The identification of genetic risk factors ( via linkage ) in combination with environmental factors and microbial make up may allow for at-risk individuals to be identified , pre-symptomatic treatment , or avoidance of certain behaviours ( i . e . Smoking ).
Conclusion
The findings suggest that the periodontal disease and caries may or may not co-exist , but in patients where they are concurrent , there appears a positive association in the prevalence of caries and the severity of periodontal disease .
Clinical relevance- In a few subjects , however , despite the careful plaque control , disease recurrence still appears . To determine the best plan of treatment for such patients , studies to unravel the etiopathogenesis , environmental factors and genetic make-up are necessary . This knowledge may be able to assist to identify at risk patients and in offering prophylactic care to them . Keeping in view the high prevalence , enormous financial burden and the wide range systemic effects of oral infections , there is urgent need for the development of more potent topical antimicrobial agents that target the suppression of the specific microorganisms by topical treatment and tailor risk reduction strategies for lowering the susceptibility of the host through the alteration of modifiable risk factors to combat these diseases .[ 42 ] Within the limitations of the current investigation , the findings suggest that the periodontal disease and caries may or may not co-exist , but in patients where they are concurrent , there appears a positive association in the prevalence of caries and the severity of periodontal disease . It has been proposed that background factors might produce sufficient quantities of clinically relevant ecological shifts in the host biofilm so as to make conducive for a particular disease condition . The simultaneous occurrence of periodontal disease and dental caries should be kept in mind also when defining associations between dental diseases and other diseases . Prospective randomized controlled trials are warranted for further analysis of this tendency . It is important for the evaluation of dental treatment needs and for the planning of comprehensive treatment and preventive strategies , in the context of a modern cause-related dental therapy and preventive approach .
