These book and reading activists communicated
to the national headquarters details about the prevailing situation in these places, things like their
characteristic domestic and social violence, alcoholism, and lack of attention and emotional care
for children. They also highlighted the absence of
smiles on these children’s faces.
One of the project’s victories is that it has been
able to establish horizontal (and not top-down) relations with community. Parents are very grateful
for the help they receive in the form of school
supplies and clothing. This is also allowed for a
similar relationship with the community-at-large
and, discreetly, with ‘official’ neighborhood coordinators.
