This explains why it does not allow people to connect to the Internet free of its control. This monopoly turns most Cubans into the technological illiterates of Latin America, not to mention the rest of the world. This is what puts Cuba’s economic, academic and cultural future at risk. The Apostle José Martí once wrote: “BE EDUCATED TO BE FREE”; access to the Internet and information technologies in CUBA is not a luxury, but instead a kind of culture or education that is essential to being free. 19
