Home is the only place a child has access to
Afro-Cuban culture, and arts schools focus
on the Renaissance and Europe. This keeps
the colonial method of erasing cultural
memory alive and well, and imposes foreign ideals, like Marxism, which have nothing to do with the Yoruba kingdom or Holy
Catholic Church, which are the actual, profound roots of our culture.
The list of alternative events and activists
that deal with race issues is long, but let me
focus on culture, especially Hip Hop. For
the first time since 1959, this art form discusses the subject openly, with selfcensorship, in large spaces like the Alamar
amphitheater, home of the first Cuban Hip
Hop festival, and the cradle of a movement
that would grow to a national and international level.
