Who were the members of the jury?
One was from the CubaRaw freelance
photography agency, and other Cuban
visual artists: Geandy Pavón, actor/filmmaker Ismael de Diego (from
New York); writer and photographer
Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo (from Washington); Claudio Fuentes (Havana) and
Francis Sánchez (Ciego de Ávila). You
can also see the materials sent to the
judges, which did not identify any of
the competing artists.

This competition had even greater participation in its second iteration, right?
Who were those who won awards?
This time we were lucky enough to
have 100 participants, although there
were fewer people from the provinces.
It is also curious that there were more
men than women. The theme was our
Cuba and the multiplicity of its contemporary contexts, with an emphasis on
the social and people.
Raciel del Amo (1991), with second
prize going to Dunia Cordero Amador
(1990), and third prize going to Israel
MOYA Torres (1987). We also did five
honorable mentions, to Ilei D Jesús,
Ernesto Santana, Oscar Rodríguez, Fabiana Salgado, and Mileidy Septien
(MILO).
This second competition was more aesthetically rigorous than the first one.
There were many photography students,
young people who were interested in
photographic artistic expression who
joined the project, despite the demonic
way in which these types of independent projects are characterized. Many
who came were cautious and afraid, but
after meeting Luis and me they calmed
down and even proposed joining us as
photographers for CubaRaw from that
moment on. That was the case with the
first prize, Raciel Amo, a 22 year-old,
self-taught photographer with incredible
photos, and it was his first time in a
Will there be any future exhibits?
We are planning monthly exhibits and
on having artistic materials (both Cuban
and universal, and current) to distribute
free of charge on DVDs, for those who
are interested. We did our first exhibit
with CubaRaw’s principal photographers, in August 2013: it was a great
success. Many people came, particularly art-oriented young folks.
After the exhibit and awarding of the
País de Píxeles prizes, we are also
planning a personal exhibit of visual
