Design Statement – ‘An Essence of Federation’
Royston Residence
The Inspiration
The inspiration behind this design starts with the Royston's expressed interest in Australian style
and history, coupled with their desire to achieve an atmosphere that is inviting, relaxed,
supports a well being and sustainability. Hence the catch phrase noted on the presentation
as ‘Rest, Reflect & Rejuvenate’.
The Federation era has been chosen as the historic influence, as it’s birth came from a
desire for Australia’s own style in architecture and interior decoration.
The beauty of the this era’s design is the simplicity in its style, but statement about being
authentically Australia with the use of Australian timbers, flora and fauna images. The
household fittings were not overstated, and so are well suited to fit into style contemporary
interior without being too ‘old fashioned’.
The catch phrase ‘Rest, Relax and Rejuvenate’ has influenced the selection of colours,
furniture, fittings etc . Most of the Federation style furniture has been sourced through
second-hand sales outlets such as Gumtree and eBay. Soft furnishings and hard finishes have
been selected with a focus on Australian made, natural, easy care and sustainability.
