When he saw the top forks in his scope he thought it was a nice four point buck. Shortly after hiking down to where his buck was laying something moving on the ridge above caught his eye only 75 yards away. It was a monster four point buck that he could only watch run over the hill as he yelled for Charlie to give chase. Charlie was not able to get a look at the buck but they both came back to camp very excited at what they had seen throughout the day. That night as we planned the next day’ s hunt and dressed out Ryan’ s deer in camp Charlie wanted to go back up where they had seen the big buck. Now when I say up, I mean straight up. These deer were in there for a reason. Not many people wanted to hike up this
steep hill and Doug and I were feeling the effects from a long day of hiking many miles. With blistered feet and sore legs we begrudgingly agreed to go back as Charlie’ s excitement was hard to deny. The next morning we all four headed up in the dark hoping to have a good vantage point to glass from as the sun came up. We found a ridge and spread out to start glassing. After about 20 minutes Ryan and I decided to move down the ridge to get a better view of the bottom of the drainage. Charlie was on top of the ridge and Doug had worked around to the top up from Charlie. Just as I went to sit down to do some more glassing I noticed a doe walking out of the bottom of the draw we could not see from the ridge top. When I looked through my binoculars I saw several more doe’ s start to come out of the shadows headed up the opposite hillside. That is when I saw him. A quick look at the width of his spread was all I needed. I grabbed my rifle and struggled to find him in my scope. Ryan was practically yelling at me to shoot!!!“ THERE IS A HUGE FOUR POINT RIGHT THERE”!!! What seemed like minutes was really only seconds before I was able to get a good view and take my shot just under 300 yards away.
Only seconds after I shot we heard shooting coming from up the ridge. Unknown to us Doug had seen another buck feeding out the top of the draw and was moving to get a shot when I took mine. After hearing me shoot he ran to the top of the ridge just in time to catch a nice 3x4 making a quick exit out the top. When all the dust had settled we had two very nice bucks only a few hundred yards apart and Charlie
