The Read to Rise (R2R) Green Space programme was created by Bridge Foundation and
funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) in
Trinidad and Tobago, implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The programme operated in Mayaro and Guayaguayare Communities at Ortoire R.C.
School and Guayaguayare R.C. School for one year with the commitment from teachers
and families to continue environmentally focused curricula in schools and to participate in
sustainable environmental practices at school, home and in the community.
Thinking Globally Acting Locally
Established in 1992, the year of the Rio Earth Summit, the GEF Small Grants
Programme at the United Nations Development Programme embodies the very essence of
sustainable development by “thinking globally acting locally.” By providing financial and
technical support to projects that conserve and restore the environment while
enhancing people’s well-being and livelihoods, SGP demonstrates that community
action can maintain the fine balance between human needs and environmental
imperatives.
