Winter appeal: The act of giving
Sermon of the Year 2018 - Be Set Free
At this time of year, many people are thinking about
the act of giving. We celebrate God’s greatest gift to
humankind at Christmas, we give hospitality, we
give gifts to one another, and we give in many more
ways besides.
You may have already given to a charity you
support this winter but if you haven’t then please
consider giving to LWPT. We have recently awarded
20 vocational grants to recipients who asked for
assistance in their studies. We couldn’t do this without your fantastic support.
A gift towards LWPT will help us continue giving these grants to those starting
out in their preaching vocation or those who wish to further their knowledge.

Festival of Preaching
LWPT trustee, John Griffiths, on his experience of the Festival of Preaching.
‘This is the first such event organised by the Church Times. And they sourced
the best preachers they could find, a cast list they will find it hard to top for
subsequent events. There were plenty of talks about preaching. But plenty of
sermons as well.
The talks covered the whole waterfront of sermons from preparation,
tackling awkward texts, delivery, story and the use of language. But the
highlight was the passion of all the speakers for scripture and expounding it.
One particular surprise was Martin Piercy giving a socio-political reading of
the gospel miracles. Describing how Jesus made the ruler of the synagogue
wait while he prioritised the woman with the issue of blood who Jairus had
excluded from the synagogue, Dr Piercy asked what Jesus would say to those
who told others in the church that they would have to wait?
If you are a preacher you’ll hope they find a way to raise the bar even higher
next time. This festival is one not to be missed.’
