Grants Case Study: Amy Barker
At every stage of my life I have loved asking
God, ‘what next?’ As someone who thrives
on doing new things, trying new ideas
and meeting new people, God has never
disappointed me, and he has revealed step by
step the path for my life.
I knew from a young age that God was calling
me to ‘something’, although I had no idea what
that would be. I have been a youth worker, a
missionary, a teacher, and have had other jobs
along the way, but I knew that the one thing
I really wanted to do was to study theology.
When I felt God say that it was finally the right
time for me to go, I was so excited!
I studied as a placement-based student at
Spurgeon’s College, with half my week studying
in college and the other half of my week
learning ‘on the job’ in a church.
My placement at Royal Docks Community
Church was perfect for me. I learnt so much,
as so much of the church was different from
what I had experienced in the past. It changed
how I see church and mission and gave me a
real excitement for what God has in store for
my future. Through it all I have discovered that
I love studying. Even writing essays is now
something I enjoy! I hope that sometime soon
I can start a Master’s course, to continue my
studies in theology.
My husband and I now jointly lead Walsgrave Baptist Church in Coventry. I am so excited by what
the future may hold, as you never know what life and ministry is going to throw at you next.
My grant from LWPT was a big part of me getting to where I am today. I want to say a big “thank
you” for enabling me to achieve a long-held dream.
