Grants update : Tom Bryant
To the Trustees of LWPT , I wanted to write to thank you for the grant of £ 300 you gave to me last academic year to purchase books related to my course of study at Oak Hill College .
I am really grateful , and the money has been put to good use in purchasing books that have been a significant help to me in my studies , and will no doubt continue to be extremely valuable in my ongoing ministry .
I used the grant you provided to purchase some of the more expensive books on the reading lists for my course this year , which I would otherwise have been unable to afford . Some examples are John Frame ’ s Systematic Theology , and Thomas Schreiner ’ s commentary on Galatians .
The course itself has been amazing – I have learnt a huge amount , particularly about teaching and preaching from some of the more difficult books
of the Bible , such as the Minor Prophets ( especially Habakkuk ), and the book of Acts .
Don Carson ’ s weighty tome “ Commentary on the New Testament use of the Old Testament ” was particularly helpful for tackling the book of Habakkuk and thinking through how Paul uses Habakkuk 2:4 (“ the righteous person will live by his faithfulness ”) in his letters .
Another one of the books I was able to buy with the help of the LWPT grant was David Peterson ’ s commentary on Acts . This book provided some very helpful insights into Acts , and helped me to trace some of the key themes , such as the Holy Spirit , and persecution , through the text . This , combined with the excellent lecture course , mean that I feel much more equipped , and enthusiastic , to tackle Acts as a preacher .
