Built with the Chinese in mind
Annie Siara examines how Macau ’ s casinos and integrated resorts have been tailored to suit Chinese consumers
Feng shui At its heart , the ancient Chinese practice of feng shui ( literally ‘ wind and water ’) is used to create harmony and so bring good fortune . Enter any Macau casino and it will have feng shui aspects built into its design . Chinese gamblers are generally superstitious ; when they feel lucky , they will gamble more .
Colours Another lucky element deployed with the Chinese in mind . Gold and red are considered particularly lucky and are often used inside Macau ’ s casinos .
Numbers Number four is considered unlucky as it sounds like the word for ‘ death ’ in Mandarin . What this means in everyday life is there is no player number four on gaming tables ; you won ’ t find a fourth floor marked in a lift ; and in hotels , room numbers will avoid the number .
Numbers considered lucky include six , eight and nine .

Food and beverage Away from gaming , the casinos ’ hospitality , entertainment , food and beverage functions are geared more towards Chinese tastes , as these pictures from food courts in Macau and Las Vegas testify .
