An update on Macau inbound tourism
Annie Siara analyses trends in visitation to Macau , both over the past year and in the first quarter of 2021
Macau welcomed 39.4 million visitors in the pre-pandemic days of 2019 , with 70 % of the total visitor arrivals coming from mainland China . Since lockdown in February 2020 , the tourism industry has seen an 85 % drop in visitor numbers .

40 amount of money spent ( excluding gaming expenses ) in Q121 also rose compared to the corresponding period last year .

The first quarter of 2021 saw a 46 % decrease in visitor arrivals year-on-year , but those who did visit remained longer compared to the average length of stay in Q1 2019 . The

According to the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau ( DICJ ), during the May Golden Week holiday , gross gaming revenue rose 492 % to MOP10.4bn ( US $ 1.3bn ). A total of 167,000 visitors arrived in Macau during the five-day holiday , more than 93 % of whom came from China , according to the Macau Government Tourism Office ( MGTO ).
During the annual media briefing on 10 February 2021 , the director of MGTO , Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes , said that
