Welcome to this edition of the IBS Insider.
Even after 40 + years in technology, I find immense satisfaction in seeing what new technology can do. Artificial intelligence( AI) is one such technology that excites me and makes me think about the potential of accomplishing so much more.
Take a moment to consider the possibilities. Summarizing large amounts of information from documents; identifying trends in operational performance; writing communications; aiding people struggling with a task that was previously overwhelming. AI can help commercial real estate companies reduce time spent on repetitive tasks, allowing people to focus on the properties, relationships, and decisions that require their attention. This represents a great opportunity to be enthusiastic about. It also calls for thoughtful leadership.
The articles in this issue discuss how we can capitalize on the opportunity presented by AI while protecting the information and systems provided to us.
“ Shadow AI Is Already In Commercial Real Estate. Are You Governing It?” examines how employees are utilizing AI in their daily work, many times without having received approval from their organization. Employees’ use of AI can highlight security vulnerabilities and opportunities to improve business operations. Understanding what employees need is an important first step toward providing approved tools and guidance.
“ Your Data— And Others’ Too— Just Left The Building” examines what can accompany an employee’ s unintentional data upload. An invoice or lease document includes much more than the data points an employee wants to have analyzed using AI. It may also include confidential information related to tenants, suppliers / vendors, and / or business partners. Utilizing AI appropriately requires an understanding of whose information you possess, and how the tools you select will treat that information.
“ Nobody Drew The Line” expands upon the concept of protecting data to include building management systems. Building management systems such as heating and cooling equipment, access control systems, and other similar interconnected systems should receive the same consideration regarding security boundaries and supplier access as the systems supporting the business. The convenience of installation should not overshadow the responsibility for ongoing protection.
A common theme throughout all three articles exists: organizations receive greater benefit from using technology when they understand how employees are using it and assume responsibility for managing it.
At IBS, we want our clients to approach AI with both enthusiasm and confidence. This involves identifying potential applications of AI that are beneficial to your business, setting reasonable limits on its application, and engaging employees in reviewing the results. When implemented thoughtfully, AI can enhance what your team is capable of achieving.
Thank you for continuing to place your faith in IBS. I hope this issue generates discussions about what AI can enable your organization to achieve, and what you will need to implement to confidently pursue it.
