In this virtual IBC Special to go with the , sadly , virtual expo , we take a dive into Cloud production and playout . Earlier this year , we gathered six experienced practitioners to talk about video production and playout in the Cloud . Not surprisingly , it was agreed the pandemic and its WFH had accelerated an existing trend of shifting production away from on-prem to the Cloud . It also highlighted some of the remaining challenges : Whether transferring to the cloud is right for you depends a lot on where you start from – no one would build a hardwired on-prem facility from scratch now , but determining how you transition from a heavily-invested existing infrastructure is more difficult . Also , as ever , the problems were less related to technology than to human resources and business rules . For instance , if a supply chain has to use multiple clouds – perhaps private and public – who pays for the egress from one to another ? If a content rights deal needs the kind of security that requires individual files to be supplied to an end user , or multiple copies to be kept , who pays for the storage ? And , while remote working can increase your available engineering and development talent pool , it certainly presents challenges in recruitment , training and team building . As with the Cloud itself , the ideal model is hybrid – work in the Cloud , develop in the Cloud but get to meet in person as well . Here ’ s hoping for 2022 .
