SHAKERS & MOVERS n CHARITY CORNER C ouches for a Cause was brought to Alonzo A. Crim Open Campus High School in Atlanta, GA in January 2018 when a local organization donated couches that had been damaged during transit. While wanting to provide assistance to families in need in the surrounding community, Crim had to figure out a way to refurbish the couches, making them suitable for donation. In an effort to get the couches into the community as quickly as possible, three student volunteers were recruited to assist with the refurbishment process. A year later, Couches for a Cause is now an accredited class offered at Crim Open Campus High School. earned over $10,000 and has created a state of the art workshop. Crim is located in an urban school district in Atlanta, GA serving predominately low socioeconomic students with various aca- demic, behavioral, social and emotional needs in a non-traditional school setting. At this time, Couches for a Cause is in direct contact with a local college in hopes of creating a partnership that will provide students with post-graduation college and career opportunities. Couches for a Cause recognizes there would not be a program or class if it was not for the help of local business partners and as great as the program is challenges still exist. The price to maintain the workshop is a steep one to pay. Students hope that the community will continue offering their support and resources in a collective effort to keep the program and class alive. n Crim is constantly seeking partnerships that will provide support in accomplishing the college and career readiness goals of the students. Students have been given a second chance for success at Crim. Not only are students receiving high school credit, but in this program they are entrepreneurs. Since its inception, students have created their own website, logo, slogan, and several business partnerships. Students have the opportunity to receive community service hours and a small stipend in addition to the hands-on experience both in and outside of the classroom. with a local middle school which will result in preparing students for the program at an earlier age.
