In the nineties, as the country was opening itself to Western influences, Kalab became one of the pioneers of the local scene, and found it an ionic crew, “The DSK.” Many sleepless nights around train yards and time spent at police stations helped this young graffiti artist develop his style and make a name for himself across Europe as “Cakes.” In 2000, he took his graffiti to New York, where he made an impression painting whole cars alongside graffiti heavy-hitters, “Key” and “Rome.” Overtime, his forms became more geometric and organic. Visitors will notice the use of colorful squares and circles in his art. While Jan’s work has its roots entrenched in traditional graffiti, he has evolved greatly over the years, elevating the genre with a techno color palette, abstract organic shapes and three-dimensional letter sculptures and canvases. The artist’s motto reflects his evolving body of work; “Always getting higher, always inventing new forms—a tribute to the soul of graffiti.” n
