ouches for a Cause was brought to
Alonzo A. Crim Open Campus High
School in Atlanta, GA in January
2018 when a local organization
donated couches that had been damaged
during transit. While wanting to provide
assistance to families in need in the
surrounding community, Crim had to figure
out a way to refurbish the couches, making
them suitable for donation. In an effort to get
the couches into the community as quickly
as possible, three student volunteers were
recruited to assist with the refurbishment
process. A year later, Couches for a Cause
is now an accredited class offered at Crim
Open Campus High School. earned over $10,000 and has created a state
of the art workshop. Crim is located in an urban school district
in Atlanta, GA serving predominately low
socioeconomic students with various aca-
demic, behavioral, social and emotional
needs in a non-traditional school setting. At this time, Couches for a Cause is in
direct contact with a local college in hopes
of creating a partnership that will provide
students with post-graduation college and
career opportunities. Couches for a Cause recognizes there would
not be a program or class if it was not for
the help of local business partners and
as great as the program is challenges still
exist. The price to maintain the workshop
is a steep one to pay. Students hope that
the community will continue offering their
support and resources in a collective effort
to keep the program and class alive. n
Crim is constantly seeking partnerships that
will provide support in accomplishing the
college and career readiness goals of the
students. To date, Couches for a Cause has It is the school’s mission to prepare students
for a life after Crim, continuing as productive
and contributing members of society.

Students, both male and female alike, not only
refurbish the furniture but also aggressively
participate in marketing. Students have
been given a second chance for success at
Crim. Not only are students receiving high
school credit, but in this program they are
entrepreneurs. Since its inception, students
have created their own website, logo, slogan,
and several business partnerships. Students
have the opportunity to receive community
service hours and a small stipend in addition to
the hands-on experience both in and outside
of the classroom.
with a local middle school which will result
in preparing students for the program at
an earlier age. In addition to the creation
of partnerships, students continue to
acknowledge the heart and foundation
of the program by continuing to donate
refurbished furniture to families in need.
