Protective Hair Styles 101
By Chana Yon
P
rotective hair styles, in the past, were used to assist with
transitioning from relaxed to natural or simply a way to get
past growing pains. Presently, that has not been the case.
Today braiding, weaving, twisting and locks have all become an
avenue to adding flair and style! Protective styles are trending!
Besides being low maintenance, which is number one on the
scale, the hair is given a break by putting it away and length is
preserved. When trying to achieve hair length goals protective
styles are highly recommended as it reduces daily manipulation
which can cause breakage.
THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR
Despite the fact that protective styles are so convenient, there are
things to watch out for:
• Itching-This can be caused by over drying and tension.
• Dryness-Hair can become brittle and break if it remains dry
for long periods of time.
• Excessive Tension-This can lead to itching, bumps, swelling
of the scalp and even hair loss.
• Smelly Hair-Reduction in shampooing and mildew are the
main reasons for smelly hair; the look of some styles can be
drastically altered after shampooing and trapped moisture
from improper drying causes mildew.
SCALP CARE TIPS
Just because protective styles can be so carefree for the wearers,
the scalp should not be neglected! Here are a few tips to help
maintain a healthy scalp:
• Protective styles are not intended to last forever and should
not stay in longer than 6-8 weeks. It's imperative to give the
scalp a chance to breathe allowing for shampoo, treatments
and trims to prevent breakage and splitting.
• For times when there is dryness and itching, always have
products to soothe your scalp.
• A clean scalp is a happy scalp. It's important to find different ways
to clean the hair and scalp without altering the look of your style.
• Alopecia. If you are experiencing a continuous pain days after
your service, then it is highly recommended to TAKE IT OUT!!!!
Many protective styles require some reasonable levels of tension
in order to execute the style, however excessive tension can
cause what is called Traction Alopecia resulting in hair loss.
Don't be afraid to switch up your style and try something new!
Get inspired with it all…long, short, straight, curly and COLOR!!!!
