From page 30 project to collect case study data on interventions following the widespread onset of MD symptoms in spring 2023 – 24. These findings will be shared in an upcoming grower forum. While some trees have shown signs of recovery, others have not responded to interventions, with growers opting in some cases to remove the trees altogether. Discussions with growers who have avoided or minimised MD issues point to several potential preventative strategies. One is the early implementation of a post-harvest nutrition program— beginning at hull split— that provides around one-third of the annual nutrient allocation. This may support continued photosynthesis and starch replenishment before leaffall. Tree hedging and trimming strategies have also been explored with varying success. Some growers are using kelp, humates, and microbial products, which are thought to enhance plant health and disease resistance, though evidence is mostly anecdotal. Overall, these findings suggest that the prevention and management of MD depend largely on reducing plant stress and optimising tree health to maintain sufficient carbohydrate reserves. Maintaining good irrigation practices, timely nutrient support, and minimising environmental stress are key to ensuring successful spring growth and sustaining yields in Monterey almond trees.
