Unearthing the impact of soil amendments
IN 2018, SARDI established a field trial at the Almond Centre of Excellence( ACE) to investigate how various soil amendments influenced the productivity of young almond orchards. Designed to reflect commercial growing conditions, the trial explored a range of compost application methods and rates, including 10 and 50t / ha, alongside incorporation techniques such as rotary hoeing, spading and subsoil injection. Additional treatments included annual compost injections and a ryegrass-based mounding approach known as“ Supersoil”. Irrigation systems tested across the site included drip, sprinkler and a combination of both( as appropriate for the soil management treatments). Continued page 40
