Preparation is the best tool we have at this point in time, including the development of good relationships between growers and pollination service providers.
- Pollination Industry Coordinator Rebecca Sloan had discussions with a Varroa Development Officer. It is expected this knowledge will help the beekeeping industry through this transition. There has also been specific upskilling activities taking place such as the queen breeding and farm business resilient training. Along with training activities the program is working on an updated Guide to Varroa Management, and updates to the Beekeeping Code of practice and Biosecurity Manual.
The T2M will wind up in early February 2026, and while it is disappointing that we are no longer free of Varroa it is reassuring that the T2M activities have slowed the spread so beekeepers across the nation have more time to prepare and adjust, minimising the uncertainty and providing confidence in managing for the future. Work in the pollination space will continue with the Australian Pollination Strategy. This strategy is being prepared by the Wheen
Bee Foundation and will be working to protect pollinators of all types including European honey bees as well as alternative pollinators, to be able to bolster biodiversity, food security and ecosystem health. Between now and February should you feel you would benefit from support, please reach out either to your local Varroa Development Officer or National Coordinator Tamara Prentice at tamara. prentice @ dpird. nsw. gov. au
