New study supports eating almonds to promote muscle recovery from exercise
A NEW study supported by the Almond Board of California , explored the impact of eating almonds on exercise recovery among individuals who exercised less than three times a week . Simone Austin , an Australian Advanced Sports Dietitian , says the research found that snacking on almonds , 57 grams spread out over two sittings in the day , promoted muscle recovery and reduced fatigue from exercise . There were 64 healthy adults with an average age of 46 , who for four weeks engaged in a 90-minute exercise session , with half eating almonds and half a cereal bar with equal kilojoule value to the 57 grams of almonds . Those who ate almonds experienced improved leg and lower back strength , faster recovery post-exercise , and reduced fatigue and tension . Simone explains that some of the key specific findings were : “ Those eating almonds had lower levels of serum creatine kinase , a marker of muscle damage , immediately and one day after exercise . " Additionally , they showed higher levels of specific oxylipins associated with muscle function and recovery . ( Note that the oxylipins are unsaturated fatty acids important in reducing inflammation .) " The study also highlighted increased levels of polyphenols known for their natural antioxidant health benefits .” Simone concludes that the study shows promising results .
However , it should be noted this is a small number of a specific population group , limiting our ability to generalise the results . Nonetheless , the study suggests that almonds could be a convenient , nutritious snack and a valuable addition to sports nutrition strategies , that align with fitness goals .
David C . Nieman , DrPH , FACSM , Professor and Principal Investigator , Human Performance Laboratory , Appalachian State University , led this novel research , supported with funding from the Almond Board of California .
