Russian-Italian

Cultural Cooperation

in the Field of Art

Relations between Russia and Italy in the field of culture and art have a long history. To a large extent, their development was facilitated by the common spiritual origins of the two countries, dating back to the same archetype - Byzantine. This circumstance initially put Italy in a privileged position in comparison with other European states, where such a commonality with the roots of Russian culture was not observed. Despite the fact that the Russian and Italian cultural traditions historically developed in parallel, over the centuries they have had many points of contact.

Already in the 15th century, Russia and Italy were in contact in the field of applied disciplines - fortification and urban planning. Italian architects have made a huge contribution to the development of Russian urban planning. First, in Moscow, and then in other Russian cities, architects invited from Italy began to create, among whom were Pietro Solari and Aristotle Fioravanti. These masters participated in the creation of architectural masterpieces, making an invaluable contribution to Russian material culture. Through them, grains of the Italian Renaissance fell on the soil of the original Russian culture.
