REPUBLIC DAY IN TURKEY All people in Turkey celebrate Republic Day on 29 October. The Turkish Republic’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk,gave us this day. Republic Day is a national holiday and the most important holiday in Turkey. The Turkish flag is the common symbol of Republic. People have grasped some ideals such as freedom and equality with the formation of the Republic. A republic is a form of public management. Sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the nation in a republican administration. Schools, buildings and official places are usually closed on this day. Many people go to stadiums and watch performances by children. The performances usually consist of poetry reading and traditional Turkish dances and the like. Some schools have a traditional show with a convoy, flags and musical bands. Many people also visit Atatürk’s mausoleum in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. At GKV we watched the show by the primary school students. We felt the same enthusiasm as they had. I hope that this will continue in the coming years. Our ancestors worked hard to give us a happy and peaceful society. We have comfort, tranquility and happiness thanks to them.
