PLAY RECREATES LAST HOURS OF CHILE’S
SALVADOR ALLENDE
By ROMINA VENEGAS
LUIS BARRALES, CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST PROMISING VOICES OF CHILEAN THEATER, WROTE
ALLENDE, NOCHE DE SEPTIEMBRE AS A COMMEMORATION OF THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE COUP
D’ÉTAT IN CHILE.
CHILE — Two years after its premiere in 2013, Allende, Noche de
Septiembre returns. The protagonists of the play, which is showing
until June 27, are Jaime Lorca, José Secall and Nona Fernández.
The play presents Salvador Allende in the night before the Coup.
“What does a man do who finds out in the middle of the night that
he will die the next morning?” thinks Barrales. He recreates the
atmosphere that could have been felt when Allende had to decide
whether to retire or to defend his government until the end.
The script is the result of an intense investigation that he carried
out with the director of the play, Pablo Casals. Through it they
distinguished the President’s distinctive details. However, the play is
not related to history, but is a work of fiction that constantly winks to
current Chile.
Luis Barrales gives a voice to marginalized groups in the political,
ideological and economic system by addressing topics relevant to
the Chilean reality.
