"This photo means the world to me! Pictured next to me is a photo of my
grandmother Lucille Smith Cheers born in 1924. She lived through the Great
Depression, both World Wars, segregation, The Civil Rights Movement etc. She
bore 16 children and worked as a domestic (maid) for white families in
Murfreesboro. Here I am graduating from an institution founded in 1911 that
integrated African American students in 1967, on the steps of the oldest building
on campus. I know everyday that she dreamed and prayed for a better life for her
children and her children's children. I am one of the manifestations of her prayers.
Granny impacted my life with the years I was able to spend with her. She has
been with me on this journey and I know she is proud. I am graduating with a
degree in Global Studies and Cultural Geography with a concentration in Political
Science. I am going into a career of public service starting with AmeriCorps."
She's Fierce & Focused!
