Staying focused

This month marks one year since KCI Publishing decided to launch a new media platform dedicated to hydrogen , and yet it feels as if we have only just begun . Time flies when you are having fun ! One of our first tasks was to define the scope of Hydrogen Tech World , with no shortage of options . Ultimately , the decision was made to keep it fairly narrow and focus on technologies associated with hydrogen production via water electrolysis , hydrogen transport , storage and distribution , and hydrogen application in fuel cells .
I am proud to observe that we have managed to maintain a sharp focus on our mission as set out in my first editorial for this magazine just under a year ago , when I wrote : “ We aim to facilitate and streamline the exchange of knowledge and experience between our existing communities of tens of thousands of industry professionals involved in flow control and corrosion-resistant alloys , and the mushrooming network of experts specialising in electrolyzers , fuel cells , nonmetallic materials , compressors , and other types of industrial equipment used between the electrolyzer plant and point of end use .”
What I find particularly fascinating about the rapidly emerging hydrogen sector is that it brings together people from all corners of industry , eager to innovate and contribute to a sustainable future . Some companies are still searching for their place in the hydrogen value and supply chains , while others are more firmly established in the sector or have a clear vision of how to become an important market player . Crucially , they all possess know-how and experience specific to their field of expertise , and it is their collective knowledge that holds the key to unlocking the full potential of hydrogen .
Despite excluding fossil-based hydrogen production methods , end uses of hydrogen , government policies and market forecasts , the range of topics that fall within the scope of Hydrogen Tech World is surprisingly broad , and it still feels like we are only scratching the surface . The present issue features articles on three relevant topics covered for the first time in this magazine . Roy Niekerk and Radhouene Manita address the important subject of thermal management in green hydrogen production , discussing three hybrid cooling solutions and the factors influencing the selection of cooling technology . Henrik Tækker Madsen sheds light on fundamental questions concerning the use of water in green hydrogen production , including water quality , quantity and treatment , while Katherine Rinaldi raises the issue of iridium scarcity and discusses methods of reducing the dependence of PEM electrolyzers on iridium .
The cover story features Evonik , one of the world ’ s leading producers of specialty chemicals . Recently , the chemical giant has expanded its portfolio of high-performance membranes to drive the transition of today ’ s conventional energy supply to a sustainable gas economy of tomorrow . By developing membranes for hydrogen recovery and green hydrogen production , the company is intensifying its efforts to drive sustainability through technological innovation .
The next issue of Hydrogen Tech World will be released in December . If interested in contributing to it , please feel encouraged to contact me at m . matosec @ kci-world . com .
Wishing you much reading pleasure ,
