Essential steps for safer production of green hydrogen
Veronica Constantin , Vice President for Global Sustainability at
Emerson , explains how automation technology is helping to accelerate the transition to a clean-fuel economy by ensuring safe production of green hydrogen .
Carbon-free green hydrogen , produced through electrolysis and using renewable energy , offers the potential to end our dependence on fossil fuels as we work to meet climate goals . However , there are a number of significant challenges to overcome related to production , transportation and distribution before we can realise its potential . Currently , the vast majority of hydrogen is produced by carbon-based production methods , such as natural gas reforming . However , the industry is moving very quickly , addressing key areas , such as the need to efficiently scale up production and significantly reduce production costs .
New methods of production create a need for additional safety protocols to protect people and infrastructure . A focus on safety is always important , but especially so when the industry is accelerating fast from a research and development base . Green hydrogen production is still in its relative infancy , which means the industry is still learning and developing , and that creates a greater safety risk in the short term . However , the availability of software
