Dear readers ,

As we approach the end of 2024 , I am pleased to present to you the final issue of Hydrogen Tech World for this year – the 19th since our journey began in 2021 . As always , this issue covers a broad range of topics related to green hydrogen and its derivatives , providing a glimpse into some of the exciting developments set to shape the sector in the years ahead .
Our cover story offers a deep dive into the opportunities and challenges of green hydrogen development in emerging markets . In an exclusive interview , Sebastian Surie and Willem Frens of Climate Fund Managers discuss the critical role of blended finance in overcoming the high upfront costs of hydrogen projects and ensuring their scalability in regions with abundant renewable resources but limited access to capital . They also highlight how strategic partnerships between local and international stakeholders are essential to unlocking the potential of green hydrogen and its derivatives to drive the global energy transition .
Two such initiatives demonstrate this potential . The Hyphen project in Namibia , a landmark endeavour to produce green hydrogen and ammonia for export , showcases how developing countries can harness their vast renewable energy resources for large-scale decarbonisation . Similarly , the HyIron project , also in Namibia , illustrates the use of green hydrogen to produce green direct reduced iron , pointing the way forward for the steel industry – a notoriously hard-to-abate sector . These projects underscore the vital contributions of green hydrogen in transforming industries while fostering local economic development .
The theme of green ammonia resonates throughout this issue , which features two technical articles on the topic . The first , featured on pages 32 – 39 , examines a pre-feasibility study for a green ammonia project in Patagonia , demonstrating how the region ’ s exceptional wind resources can be harnessed to produce ammonia for global markets . The study highlights the role of advanced design tools in evaluating and optimising such projects . The second article , found on pages 46 – 51 , highlights Stamicarbon ’ s innovative technology , which enables small- to medium-scale ammonia production from renewable energy . Along with the green ammonia projects highlighted in the ‘ Contracts & Partnerships ’ news section , these articles illustrate how green ammonia is making strides towards becoming one of the earliest applications of green hydrogen on an industrial scale .
As we look forward to 2025 , I invite you to explore the details on pages 25 – 28 of Hydrogen Tech World Conference 2025 , scheduled for 13 – 14 May in Düsseldorf . The event will focus on the integration of electrolysers into industrial facilities and will feature an impressive line-up of speakers representing EPC firms , system integrators , and pioneering projects . With real-world case studies and networking opportunities , the conference promises to be a cornerstone event for the hydrogen community .
Thank you for your continued support throughout the year . On behalf of the entire Hydrogen Tech World team , I wish you a joyful holiday season and a happy , healthy , and prosperous 2025 .
