Are we
on the
right track?
I
Dr. Kiran Goswami

t has been over three decades since I enthusias-
tically changed my track. I had joined Medicine
inspired by the stories of Dr. Schweitzer, The Tale
of Two Cities, my first movie Himalay ki god mein
and then Anuradha, Arogya Niketan.... and had always
thought of working in a remote village after MBBS. I nev-
er considered there to be any need for post-graduation, as
MBBS, and, at the most, two additional six-month clinical
house jobs would give me all the needed skills.
Today, I see students entering a Medical College not
worried about their graduation, but planning for MD. Not
that it is wrong, but if a child entering class 1 plans for
College and does not learn what is taught in school, does
not get to interact and play with peers, does not enjoy dis-
covering learning step-by-step, carries a burden through-
out his school journey; what kind of a human being will
he become? What kind of a personality will he own!? Oh!
How the pleasant memories of school still put a smile on
your face and warmth in my heart!
Are we not able to see how deprived he would be?
