he �rst glimpse of India, as
the �ight glided over its
mountains and �elds, was
simply mesmerizing. My new
home for the next �ve years
looked promising and exciting.
And indeed not a single dull
moment passed from the moment
I was informed I had secured a
position in AIIMS. I never thought
that I would be lucky enough to
actually become a doctor let alone
be able to learn at the most
prestigious college in India.

imagination was soon greeted by
ferocious barking dogs in front of
a hostel tucked among many
others on a narrow congested
road. Formalities were made and I
met my roommate – my
companion in joy and sorrow for
the next 5 years – and we moved
into the gloomiest room in a
secluded hostel.
So I started my journey. Scared
and lost as I was, each day brought
me new and exciting adventures. I
held a real human heart in my
hands. I sliced into a frog and
watched its heart beat several
minutes after removal. Cringing
in fear, I pricked my own �nger to
get blood for physiolog y
experiments. ese were the
adventures that opened my eyes
to this new world, a world which
exceeded beyond my wildest
dreams.
I stumbled, stammered and
stuttered my way through the �rst
year, anatomy �owing down my
sulci and gyri like water streaming
down a river, into the second year,
