Section 1: Illustrious Years at AIIMS
H H: Sir, you have long been associated with AIIMS, almost
for 37 years (1980-2017) if I'm correct. What do you think is
the most striking change that has happened in the
evolution of AIIMS?
Dr. Misra: AIIMS has been expanding since I joined in July 1980.
When I joined AIIMS, the Dr. R P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences
was the only centre within the AIIMS campus. ereafter, IRCH
and the Cardiothoracic and Neurosciences centres were
established in the early and mid eighties. CDER and JPN Apex
Trauma centres started functioning in 2006. Currently, AIIMS,
besides being the best medical school in the country over
consecutive l4 years, AIIMS Hospital and its departments and
centres have been adjudged the best hospital brand in the country
by various national and International independent surveys. In
2015-16, 3.5 million patients attended the OPDs, more than
200,000 patients were admitted for treatment and more than
150,000 major operations were performed across various
departments and centres with outcomes comparable to the best in
the world. e strength of Faculty, Residents and Nurses has
signicantly grown many-folds since 1980. Today we have 800
sanctioned faculty (49.5% increase since I took over as Director),
141% increase in the DM/Mch seats, 35. 6%, 23.5%, 38% increase
