Bringing in a new year

Happy New Year ! Before penning this Editor ’ s Note , I went back and looked at what I wrote last year . There was so much optimism as we marked not only the start of a new year , but of a new decade . We had just begun hearing about the novel coronavirus and truly had no idea on what was to come in March and beyond .
The health pandemic changed our lives in so many ways , but we have persevered . We ’ ve made it to 2021 , and although that in and of itself is not a cure for COVID-19 , a vaccine is on the horizon and with it a chance for the normalcy we all miss .
The start of a new year is always refreshing . It ’ s an excellent time to take a step back from routine and inspect what ’ s working and what ’ s not .
So when planning for this month ’ s edition of Huntsville Living , we thought it was best to focus on everything that makes Huntsville and Walker County great . To do that , lifestyles editor Michelle Wulfson takes you on a trip deep into the Sam Houston National Forest to learn about At the Shire , a new yoga retreat and event venue for Walker County .
Wulfson also spent some time talking with Jennifer Boyd , who brings gifts from all around the globe to her shop in Downtown Huntsville . She will also tell the story of local coffee shop owners John Toland and Katey Peveto , who are looking to make a name for themselves in the music industry .
Sports Editor Josh Criswell takes you on a trip to Riverside to learn about Tallent Sausage , a staple of the small community . He will also introduce you to our Hometown Hero for this issue , which is Huntsville High School head basketball coach Jay Oliphant .
Don ’ t miss our business spotlight with new chamber of commerce board chair Dr . Kristy Vienne and a historical spotlight on the iconic Old Town Theatre .

Joseph Brown

Despite the challenges , the power to have a memorable year is in each of our hands . We ’ re excited for what the future holds , and we hope you are too . Here ’ s to 2021 !
