MATTHEW LAHEY | HISD COMMUNICATIONS Three elementary school teachers took a break Tuesday during ‘ Move In Day ’ at the new Scott Johnson Elementary School . The day was a challenge , as the construction crews were putting on the finishing touches of the extensive remodel completed this summer . Everyone was excited to see the new space , reconnect with each other , and meet new coworkers . The mood was contagious , and the positive energy around the school was palpable . The building has served as home to several different Huntsville ISD schools and grade levels , most recently the now retired Huntsville Intermediate School . As part of our successful 2021 Bond election , the district now serves fifth graders at elementary campuses , and sixth graders at newly renovated Mance Park Middle School . The change eliminates one of the transitions that students make as they move though the schools to Graduation . The 2021 Bond also allowed the district to eliminate another transition , as it retired Gibbs PreK Center and now serve our PreK students at elementary school campuses .
Windham students engage in Inaugural College and Career Day
On July 26 , Windham School District students participated in the district ’ s first 2024 College and Career Day , held at the Wynne campus in Huntsville .
This initiative , hosted by Windham ’ s College and Career Readiness department and Lee College , empowered students with essential knowledge and resources for their future educational and career endeavors .
“ Windham ’ s inaugural College and Career Day marks a significant milestone in our commitment to preparing students for success ,” Windham ’ s College and Career Windham School District , a statewide district that operates schools in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice , recently hosted the district ’ s first College and Career Day , preparing students
with invaluable tools and resources to support a productive future and career . See DAY , page 5A

Four Sam Houston State University employees who have demonstrated excellence in service , proven commitment , commendable performance and a high level of motivation have been selected as recipients of the 2024 Staff Excellence Award .
They are Jandy Kelley , administrative associate III for the College of Health Sciences ; Keith Ahee , director of enrollment services for the College of Osteopathic Medicine ; Heather Caudle , assistant director of Student Success and Coaching for the steps on budget tax rates

Walker County Commissioners Court took steps to accept the budget and set the tax rate Monday .
Commissioners Court met in a regular meeting , approving a motion to file the proposed budget with the County Clerk .
The Court received certified values , final calculations and notices from the Walker County Central Appraisal District , including the No- New-Revenue tax rate of $ 0.4153 per $ 100 of taxable valuation .
The current ad valorum tax rate is $ 0.4127 per $ 100 of taxable valuation .
The Voter-Approval Tax Rate was also calculated at $ 0.4662 per $ 100 of taxable valuation .
The Court unanimously approved a motion to publish the intent to set the ad valorum tax for the 2024-2025 budget year at $ 0.4403 per $ 100 of taxable value .
The proposed tax rate would increase taxes and raise revenue for Maintenance and Operations and debt service .
The vote was a record vote which is required by the state .
A pair of public hearings to discuss the proposed budget and the tax rate of $ 0.4403 will be held at 9 a . m . Monday , Aug . 26 , at the Walker County Courthouse Commissioners Courtroom .
Precinct 4 Commissioner Brandon Decker was recognized for completing a session of the Commissioners Court Leadership Academy held in Washington , D . C . The program is administered by the Texas County Progress to enhance working relationships between elected officials .
Decker received a certificate , but said “ the value in the experience was the opportunity to discuss issues pertaining to Walker County with other of ficials .”
The Court appointed presiding judges for the term of Sept . 1 through Aug . 31 , 2025 . The judges were nominated by the county party chairs .
Commissioners Court also approved the training of judges for the November 5 , 2024 General Election . The Court approved a notice of election for Nov . 5 . 2024 , and ordered that the General Election be held on that date .
Commissioners Court approved the renewal of SPU ’ s Google Meet Hardware License with SADA Systems until Aug . 23 , 2025 .
It awarded the contract for brush grinding and mulching for Precinct 3 . The work is not to exceed $ 15,000
