McCune grew up surrounded by the musical talents of his mother ’ s side of the family , accompanied by a deep appreciation for music on his father ’ s side . “ Some people aren ’ t as sensitive to music as other people are and I get it from both sides . Some people hear a song and it really gets inside them , it gives them chills or makes them cry , or laugh , while some people don ’ t experience that at all ,” McCune said .
Growing up on the sounds of Steve Miller Band , Bob Marley , The Eagles , Guy Clark , Townes Van Zandt , Ryan Adams , Sun Kil Moon and Sparklehorse , their inspiration imparted on McCune echoes through his music even today .
Fast forward a few years and his most recent album , Little Storms , released in 2020 during the pandemic as an experimental mix of folk and rock , produced by friend and fellow musician behind Half Avenue Productions , John Toland . “ I ’ m proud of it , I think we did some interesting things ,” McCune said . Now , he has two additional albums in the works , inspired by the balance of life and death , as he explores the happiness of welcoming his son into the world , while simultaneously mourning the loss of a family member due to COVID .
“ It ’ s two monkeys on your shoulder – one is the wonder of life prevails , you have this beautiful baby , it ’ s growing , it ’ s wonderful , and then you have this other world where death is imminent and death is certain ,” McCune said . “ It ’ s balancing life and death and the worry you have for your kid and the anxiety you can experience that everyone ’ s going through in this pandemic . Confronting death can sometimes override that happiness , but it ’ s a constant battle of trying to let the light prevail .”
“ That can also be really inspiring and good for music , so sometimes you need that sort of fear and anxiety to be able to play music . Or , the other way to think about it , you try to make the best of the fear and anxiety you experience and put it into music ,” McCune said .
