credits his own mother for teaching him disciplined work , climbing up the ranks of Walmart management in their childhood home in Hearne .
“ We don ’ t do shortcuts , we don ’ t cut corners ,” said Bennie .
In the 1980 ’ s , the Johnson ’ s jointly opened a local liquor store , but seeing how the business was furthering addiction in some people , the couple exited the spirits business .
“ People would come from the hospital straight off dialysis and get some liquor . Knowing that , we decided this time we wouldn ’ t sell any in our restaurant ,” said Bennie .
“ If they want it they can bring their own ,” said Diana , emphatically .
Leaving a legacy behind for their children is part of why they continue on their daily grind .
Bennie said , “ I ’ m getting ready to start backing out , because he ’ s ( BJ ) ready . He knows how to do it all .”
Bennie beamed with pride talking about how BJ led the charge on establishing the BBQ and Blues series at the restaurant , which highlights regional musicians .
“ We blazed the foundation , and he ’ ll turn it into what he wants it to be ,” said Diana . “ And Bennie and I hope to retire to the South Pacific … well at least the Caribbean , like a villa in Jamaica .”
