New Waverly was founded by the Houston and Great Northern Railroad Company after the residents of what became Old Waverly refused to grant the railroad a right-of-way through their community . The city is home to New Waverly Independent School District .

RIVERSIDE
Riverside was founded in 1872 when Houston & Great Northern Railroad was being built into the area . Walker County landowners gave earth , timber , and rock to the road in order to gain shipping facilities . Two famous natives of Riverside are the singer-actress Jennifer Holliday and Texas historian Eugene C . Barker .
